Martin Nicholson's Cemetery Project

St Mary the Virgin, Cropredy, Oxfordshire

It is always rather disappointing when you discover that most of the gravestones are totally unreadable.

Two, essentially identical, inscriptions but one uses the word "Relict" and the other "Widow". A widow is any woman who has been legally married to the deceased (although she is not necessarily married to him at the time of his death), and has not yet re-married; whereas the woman who was married to him at the time of his death is his relict, and remains so regardless of whether she ever marries again (and vice-versa with the genders, of course).
