M106 - A Spiral Galaxy in Canes Venatici

This image was created by median combining 7 x 90 second unfiltered images taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 250 with SBIG ST-8XE CCD. The image has been cut down to be 20 x 20 arc minutes in size.

M106 or NGC 4258 is a Sb type spiral galaxy seen from a distance of about 25 million light years. In the top-right corner of this image the magnitude 13 galaxy NGC 4248 can alos be seen. M106 was not part of Messier's original catalogue. It was discovered by Messier's colleague Mechain and was only added to the Messier catalogue in 1947.
