M19 - Globular Cluster in Ophiuchus

Click here for a review of the strengths and weaknesses of the Global Rent-A-Scope operation.

This image was created by median combining 7 x 90 second unfiltered images taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 250 with SBIG ST-8XE CCD. The image has been cut down to be 20 x 20 arc minutes in size.

Discovered in 1764. M19 (NGC 6273) is the most oblate known globular cluster. This may be due with its proximity to the Galactic Center: At 28000 light years away its diameter of 17 arc minutes equates to a diameter of 40 light years.
