Messier 83 (NGC 5236) although it is the most southerly of the Messier galaxies- and hence harder to see for northern observers - is one of the most conspicuous spiral galaxies in the sky. M83 has well defined spiral arms with areas of nebulosity, areas with many blue young stars and dark dust lanes.
