NGC 253 (Caldwell 65) in Sculptor

This image was created by median combining 7 x 90 second unfiltered images taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 250 with SBIG ST-8XE CCD. The image has been cut down to be 30 x 30 arc minutes in size.

NGC 253 is the brightest member of the Sculptor group of galaxies grouped around the South galactic pole. NGC 253 was discovered by Caroline Herschel, the sister of William Herschel, in 1783.

NGC 253 is considered a starburst galaxy because of high star formation rates and dense dust clouds in its nucleus.
