The NGC Ten Minute Challenge

NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 in Corvus

This image was created by median combining 7 x 90 second unfiltered images taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 250 with SBIG ST-8XE CCD. The image has been cut down to be 15 x 15 arc minutes in size.

The nearest and youngest example of a pair of colliding galaxies with each galaxy’s gravitational field distorting its neighbour. The collision began about 100 million years ago and is still in progress.
